What inspired your trip to Machu Picchu?

A couple of years go my wife sent me a reel on Instagram for a 5 day trek through the Peruvian Andes with Salkantay Trekking that ends at Machu Picchu. What caught her attention was that one night’s lodging was in what is called “sky domes.” These were glass covered domes with views of Humuntay and Salkantay mountains, as well as incredible views of the stars.

Did you have any hesitations?

We were both immediately interested, but it didn’t take long for some questions to arise regarding my ability to go on this trek. The trek takes you over 15,000 ft in elevation, including some nights sleeping at altitude. We decided to book the trek for our 25th wedding anniversary. The first night’s lodging was at these sky domes, which are situated around 12,500 ft. above sea level. We also knew that we would need to spend several days in Cusco, Peru acclimating to the altitude before we could go on the trek. The remaining 3 nights of the trek would all be at, or below, 9,000 ft. elevation. I had already purchased a ResMed AirMini and a Medistrom battery (the Pilot-24 Lite) for some other trips, but I was worried about how the machine would do at altitudes above the max altitude listed for the AirMini.

What made you decide to go for it?

As we were planning our trip I got an email from Lofta about a man who had taken his AirMini to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro. This gave me the confidence I needed to take the trip. I knew the machine would work to some degree at altitude, but I still worried that I wouldn’t sleep well.

Why even bring a CPAP on a trip like this?

I knew that sleep was going to be important on this trip because we were going to be trekking between 10-15 miles a day and I wanted to be as well rested as possible.

How did it all work out?

I’m happy to say that the ResMed AirMini worked wonderfully for me, as did the Medistrom battery, though the battery was only needed for one night. All told, we spent 6 nights sleeping at altitudes between 11,000 and 12,500 ft above sea level. I slept well each night, even though I need an average pressure of 12 cm H2O. If you are looking for a lightweight, packable, durable machine that will keep up with any adventure you might want to take, I couldn’t recommend this machine more highly!

Travel Tips from Lofta: Exploring Machu Picchu with a CPAP Machine

Heading to placed like Machu Picchu with a CPAP machine requires thoughtful preparation and the right equipment. Here are essential tips from Lofta for taking your CPAP therapy on this extraordinary journey!

Choosing the Right CPAP Machine

Compact and Sturdy:

Recommendation: ResMed AirMini

For travel, especially to the high-altitude site of Machu Picchu, opt for a compact and durable machine like the ResMed AirMini. Its small size is perfect for fitting into limited packing space.

Altitude Adjustment:

Verify your CPAP device's altitude tolerance. The AirMini, for instance, handles altitudes up to 8,500 feet, but performance may vary at higher elevations. Consult your provider to ensure your machine meets the demands of high-altitude environments.

Battery Packs:

Recommendation: Medistrom Pilot-24 Lite, Zopec Explore Mini

Secure a dependable power source. Battery packs are crucial for regions without reliable electrical outlets. CPAP-specific battery kits that last several nights per charge are ideal.

Solar Chargers:

Recommendation: AirMini Off-the-Grid Bundle

For extended stays, a portable solar charger can be a lifesaver, keeping your battery pack charged in the absence of traditional power sources.
