In simple terms a BiLevel device has the enhanced ability for separate pressure ranges to be set for inhalation (ipap) and exhalation (epap). The dual settings allow the patient to get more air in and out of their lungs. This more granular control of pressure can translate into an enhanced and more comfortable therapy experience especially for those that have higher inbound pressure on inhalation. BiLevel devices also have the unique ability to set a breath timing feature that measures the amount of breaths per minute a person should be taking. If the time between breaths exceeds the set limit, the machine can force the person to breath by temporarily increasing the air pressure by delivering back-up pressure.

Individuals with higher inhalation pressure ranges often find a BiLevel device to be more comfortable due to the ability of the BiLevel device to have a different pressure range set of exhalation. By allowing the device to reduce the pressure on exhalation the overall therapy experience is more comfortable and often more efficacious.

Expiratory Pressure Relief (EPR) is similar to BiLevel therapy in that it offers pressure relief as you exhale to prevent the sensation that you are fighting against the incoming airflow during exhalation. However, EPR on the AutoSet devices is more of a comfort feature that only offers pressure relief up to 3 cm, whereas BiLevel pressure relief starts at 4 cm and goes up. For those who need only a little pressure relief, EPR on an AutoSet device may be just fine. In addition, with EPR pressure relief is not a fixed amount, and the pressure drop can vary from breath to breath, whereas the BiLevel maintains a set, prescribed exhalation pressure.

There is some confusion about the term BIPAP and how it differs from BiLevel. These are actually the same thing and often used interchangeably. The names of the device will vary somewhat based on the manufacturer. One of the major manufacturers of these devices, Respironics, has registered BiPAP as a trademark name for the technology that is generically called BiLevel. The other major competitor, ResMed, calls similar devices VPAP. ResMed manufactures a device called the AirCurve which is a BiLevel device. Though the names may be different, the basic principles are the same.

The AirCurve™ 10 VAuto has disposable filters that should be replaced once per month or sooner if needed. We also suggested that you replace your tubing a few times per year and your water reservoir once per year for optimal hygiene.
